Geocaching on Skidaway Island in Savannah GA

Geocaching is a fun treasure hunt that the whole family can do for FREE. All you need is a GPS or better yet the geocaching app on your iPhone. I found out there are over 2 million geocaching places all over the world. Here is basically how it works…

Geocaching 101

You open up your app and find geocaching that is near you that you would like to find. Click on the app and away you go – there is a blue dot to tell you where you are and a green dot to tell you where the treasure is. After you find the location of the treasure you use the compass to find the exact location. Then you open the container, look at all the cool stuff other kids have left, pick one item you like and leave the toy you brought, sign the log, click you found it on the app, and you are done. That’s it and for fun take the picture of the beautiful area.

I had heard about this through some friends and decided it would be fun. We found one with-in a mile, so off we went. I just told the girls we were going on a treasure hunt and to bring a small toy. McDonald toys work best for exchange. The girls took my iPhone and they told me where to turn. Luckily, there wasn’t a lot of traffic because we made several U-turns but that is part of the adventure. Then they used the compass to find the exact spot. I think we walked past it ten times. It was our first time and it was really exciting. Next time, we will take daddy and try again.
